Within their study, ACFE assigned each of the 663 occupational fraud cases that they examined into one of three categories — asset misappropriations, corruption, or fraudulent statements. ACFE designated falsified “employment credentials” under the “non-financial fraudulent statements” category of their study. It accounted for a large share of annual losses to employers.
